Safe journey

Didio leaving, by Samuel Barrera.

My good little man, my best boy, was born sometime in the fall of 1996 and died on the last day of 2008. These photos of him were taken at home and up at the cabin. He was the dearest, gentlest soul ever. I'll write more about him after a while — "after a while" meaning "if I can ever stop crying my eyes out." My good little lamb, I love you more than anything.

Luisa - what a sweet boy, what a fun, laughing face he had. Love to hear more about him when you're ready. In the meantime, peace to you.

I'm so sorry. He's a beautiful dog. My best boy turned 12 in November. They do break your heart, but they're worth it.

My heart goes out to you. May the years of joy override the months of sadness.

FOUR FEET

I have done mostly what men do,
And pushed it out of my mind;
But I can't forget, if I wanted to,
Four-Feet trotting behind.

Day after day, the whole day through--
Wherever my road inclined--
Four-Feet said, 'I am coming with you!'
And trotted along behind.

Now I must go by some other round--
Which I shall never find--
Some where that does not carry the sound
Of Four-Feet trotting behind.

You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend,

I loved you well, and was loved. Deep love endures

To the end and far past the end. If this is my end,

I am not lonely. I am not afraid. I am still yours.

I'm so sorry! It is always so terrible to lose a beloved dog, but all those wonderful memories do give us comfort - eventually!

Peace to all.

Heather already got the poem I would have quoted. "I am still yours." Yes. That. Always.

I am very sorry for your loss. He was a beautiful dog.

My heart goes out to you..
I came across this poem today..
Grief by Norah Leney
Deep sobs -
That start beneath my heart
and hold my body in a grip that hurts.
The lump that swells inside my throat
brings pain that tries to choke.
Then tears course down my cheeks -

I drop my head in my so empty hands
abandoning myself to deep dark grief
and know that with the passing time
will come relief.

In turning points like this people usually say time will heal your pain; I disagree -- I believe memories do a better job and based on your pictures it looks like you guys are a perfect example of bonding between a dog and his human pal. Let 2009 be the year where you honor his legacy and celebrate the true friendship that existed for so long!

He must be so worried about you; trying to figure out how to comfort you and get you to stop crying. He'll always be at your side, Luisa. Bless you both tonite.

Thank you all so much. He had severe degenerative arthritis of the spine, and during his final days strong meds and the fact that he was the bravest soul on earth couldn't mask the worsening pain. His death ended that suffering. I loved him tons and I know he'll always be with me — no dog ever had a more generous spirit. Thanks again for your kind words.

My condolences, Luisa. It's always hard to lose someone you love, especially when it's your dog. They are so beautiful all their lives, so honest and kind. They leave a big space when they die too soon - as they all seem to do.

He was a very handsome fellow indeed.

Luisa: I'm sorry I just found this sad piece of news. Others have said everything we could have -- and so I hope there's still comfort in knowing that others are thinking of you now.
