"Maybe we shouldn't have these animals on the civilized streets"

That's former Attorney General Michael Bryant, the rabid hysteric behind Ontario, Canada's pit bull ban. He's sitting in the back of a police cruiser.

There was a man hanging onto his car, apparently, so Bryant sped down the wrong side of the road and tried to scrape the man off against trees and mailboxes. When the man fell from the car, Bryant ran over him. And then drove away. Killed was Darcy Allan Sheppard, 33, of Toronto. Bryant has been charged "with criminal negligence causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death," according to Toronto police Sgt. Tim Burrows.

If you visit no other link, please check out small dead animals: the awesomeness of Kate's headline and the perfection of her sentence-long post make me very happy and very jealous.

Funny, kate's headline just made me mad.

You see, there has only been one fatality, ever, in Canada caused by a dog of the 'pit bull' type. It happened in 1995, ten years before Ontario's odious legislation was enacted. The story is typically sordid, two dogs were involved, the victim was an adult who attacked them in a dark room with a baseball bat. He was in the terminal stages of a wasting disease at the time and was killed in the resulting melee.

Kate, like many, believes that dogs can be bred for aggression, that 'pit bulls' are born to fight, blah blah blah. I tried to sort her out a couple of years ago, realized it was hopeless and just dropped her blog from my list of daily reads. I figured if she was that out to lunch about something that is so easy to fact-check in the scientific literature, the rest of her stuff likely wasn't worth reading.

You know what's really funny though? She breeds and shows mini Schnauzers.

Hi,
I am writing to you to highlight the awful situation re. pit bulls and B.S.L. in Australia, where I live. I've also posted this to caveat's blog. I am trying to find dog lovers, experts, org's, etc., to combat the inflamatory comments by the head of the Victoria RSPCA:
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/rspca-victoria-president-dr-hugh-wirth-blogs-on-the-pit-bull-problem-in-victoria/story-e6frf7jo-1225788267670

Things just go from bad to worse here. Last week I was visiting BAD RAP in Oakland. This week I come home to this.

Any help and advice would be appreciated. I'd like to get a petition going, but first I need some good expert quotes and back-up. (I've been flying solo with my protest down here for a while to little effect.)

best,
Kirsten

Here's a direct link to the petition: click here.

And a classic quote from Oz here:

Despite claiming NSW had the "harshest" dog laws in Australia, Mr Hickey yesterday said he was at "pains" to find a way to halt the spate of attacks.

He rejected calls to expand the restricted dog breed list, calling it a "knee-jerk" reaction.

"If I keep expanding the restricted breed list, we will have no dogs left in NSW," he said.

No kidding, Einstein.
