A good vet will routinely check intact animals for these cancers. Incidence of pyometra is breed-dependent. Mortality with treatment is 3% to 4%. In contrast, treatments for osteosarcoma can slow the disease's progression, but the disease itself is typically fatal in short order. Neutering also increases the incidence of spay incontinence, separation anxiety, noise phobia and orthopedic injuries. True, many pet owners are not prepared to deal with intact animals. That said, a typical b itch may be in standing heat for 7 days, twice a year. Even if said b itch roamed free every day of the year, she would only be at risk of accidental breeding 14/365 = 3.8% of the time. Many families are perfectly able to supervise an intact pet, so the risk of unwanted pups is not a rationale for systematic neutering of every pet dog.
https://lassiegethelp.blogspot.com/2008/03/rottweilers-bone-cancer-and-mandatory.html?showComment=1526941139448#c4218230381371934956
{"$t":"Anonymous
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$in-reply-to":{"xmlns$thr":"http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0
"gd$extendedProperty":
{"$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33244618.post-2570237922057399346
$t":"2018-04-29T23:08:53.325-07:00
$t":"2018-04-29T23:08:53.325-07:00
text","$t":"To 14 year old Lab Nellie’s parents: First, I must...
html","$t":"To 14 year old Lab Nellie’s parents: First, I must stress that I am not a vet, and that every dog is different. It's been just over a year (Aug. 13h since we lost our big poodle Lola. Miss her so much, but knew she was really struggling. We were able to teach her to walk again (with a little assistance), she continued to lose weight and suddenly went blind in one eye only. We also noticed that her impulse control was off...like she would grab food out of our hands (not like her usual self). Then, she started falling again with more frequency. After trying to support her in all ways for 3 months, she suffered her 4th bloat episode!. I knew she was too weak to make it through this time and I could not bear to leave her in the emergency vet office all night. Her pain was clearly very great and, given that she was on the decline again over the previous week, we put her down. When we described her recent symptoms, the emergency vet felt sure that she had a brain lesion, so that helped us make the decision to put her down. Possibly, your dog's one-eye blindness might indicate a brain tumor. But, if he is happy, not in any apparent pain, and still finding a little joy in life, just keep doing what you're doing. We could have opted for. A $2500 MRI to confirm a brain tumor, but we thought "what would we do differenty?" Nothing. Just keep her comfortable and happy until we had a sign that it was time. So, keep on loving him if he's comfortable. I just found your blog through Terrier Man, and the Zanesville Zoo articles were quite a read, the Author of the Esquire article could write a book - it was riveting. On your "Chi-mix/Dobe" - I adopted/rescued/couldn't walk away from a rat terrier who was supposed to get to 20+ lbs. Needless to say she looked a lot like Jasper, all bone no appetite. After 6 months of intense battling for her life; in which I had no life she pulled through. She topped out at 7 lbs, maybe 10 lbs with a jacket on. I had the same reaction as you - omg she needs a coat because it's Florida in the winter (60°f) She was severely anemic and could not get warm. Which lead to sewing which I am not good at because no way is she a purse dog - I was in full denial. So she lived in altered wool sleeves and socks as a coat when she went out and lived in my windbreaker with a little nest made from thermal heat gear the other times, I had to wear the jacket so she could get warm enough. When she turned 1 yrs old I broke down and bought her coats. It's taken time to get used to a small dog but she's smart and very tenacious, even with her two lab friends! She's great and I wouldn't trade her for the world but I may have cried a little when I realized she wouldn't top 10 lbs. I slept on the couch so I could be near her (my husband and I had to carry her outside to go potty)by 6:30 the next morning we were off to the Vet. They brought out a gurney and let me come in the exam room. The Vet said she has nystagmus that rapid eye movement and ask if she ate, I said she did I had to hand feed her though, he later told me he could give me an MRI referral it could be something peripheral or a brain tumor. He sent me home with predinsone, antibotics and meclizine.. I knew in my heart she didn't have a tumor, her spirit is so high and even as they put her in the car her tail was wagging.. Today is day 3 and she can eat on her own, can get up by herself, she drinks more water than usual but I'm pretty sure the med's are making her thirsty. I am pretty certain she'll make a recovery I don't know if the head tilt will improve I hope so for her benefit. Our sweet Millie, an 11.5 year old cocker spaniel, was with a pet sitter when it started (over the holidays), so we aren't exactly sure how her signs presented. When we returned, she had a head tilt, had difficulty walking and didn't want to eat. We are on Day 11 without much improvement, and are now considering an MRI (we saw the ER vet, our regular vet and a neurologist already). She has other medical issues (liver, plus kidney cancer) which makes an MRI dangerous due to anesthesia, so we were hoping to wait and see, with as much supportive care as we possibly can give.

Millie's biggest challenges are being restless at night and not wanting to eat. Any other suggestions? Also food, she was eating canned chicken (after giving her an appetite stimulant), but now she doesn't want that, canned dogfood, peanut butter etc. Any suggestions? I'm indeed very blessed to have had him for 18 years and I'm doing my best to think about that right now. My heart aches and I still can't believe he's gone, he was such an important part of my life for so long. (I lost my beloved Allie--we had a deep and special connection--she was a very large Labrador, saying good-bye last Oct, she was 15+). I can tell you that I focused on how lucky I was to have her so long (average Lab life expectancy is 12-13 yrs). At times I still shed a tear for her, nearly a year after her running over the rainbow bridge. What was hard for us, is that we had to make the decision to put her down. A terrible feeling, knowing your best friend is in pain and wanting her suffering to stop. I don't know much about your situation... but do not blame yourself, as it sounds like you gave your dear Oscar everything possible. Of course you will struggle if you made the right decisions--I can tell you, you did! You put Oscar first for the last many weeks.

To make things a little easier for me, I found a vendor (on Etsy) that etches pictures on Stainless Steel pendants. I have worn Allie's picture/etching every day since it arrived, about 2 weeks after she left us. Literally, her picture is next to my heart every day. We have another Lab, Irie, 9yrs--but finally decided to add another furry-four-legged family member 4-mths ago. I named Lab #3 after Allie, her name is Callie. She is very much like my old girl and having her really has helped me adapted to Allie not being here. It took quite a bit of time to make that decision.

Prayers to you... He had been given a mild sedative injection at the vet the day before in attempt to calm him as he had been extremely agitated. Unfortunately he never fully woke up from the sedative, at least I don't think he was ever fully conscious again. He would occasionally open his eyes and try to bark in a very low voice but he didn't really seem conscious. I slept a few hours on the couch next to his bed that night and when I awoke I found that he had passed away. This is really difficult because I feel that I missed something or didn't do something I should have done to help him. I know vestibular disease is not fatal and he had started to improve slightly from that so I feel like something else had to have caused his death. I will try to reach my regular vet today and discuss it with her to try to gain some insight as to what may have happened to him. The grief from losing him is terrible, I miss him so much.
